Back to School Basics – Biracial Hair Care

back to school

Most of your kids have either already gone back to school or will be very shortly. I know that one of my biggest concerns during the school year is keeping my daughters hair looking nice through out the week with minimal time and effort. In the evenings after school there is not much time to completely re-do a hairstyle on top of everything else that has to squeeze into that time frame.

Back to School Basics

Back to School Hairstyles:

Below are some of the ideas that I found that I believe could be easily changed during the week between wash days, easily re-done without taking much time/effort, or that should last decently throughout the week (if you properly maintain them).

Tutorials on these hairstyles, plus more, can be found on The Mixed Mama Blog. Check them out.

Learn how to refresh curls:

Another tip for back to school is to learn how to easily refresh hair between washes. Protective styles aren’t for everybody or maybe you want to have your kids hair wild and free.Using the LOC/LCO method is a great way to do so. This video gives you the basics that can be expanded upon easily.

Instill self-confidence:

Self-confidence is such an important thing to teach our children. Kids can be MEAN. Help your kids know that their differences make them special. Prepare them to be able to stand up for themselves and explain that just because they may not look like the other kids, it doesn’t mean they aren’t wonderful. Help them to love themselves. Hopefully they are in classes that have some diversity to them, but if they don’t then it is your job to surround your children with some people who look like them in other social situations. Let your kids know they aren’t alone. Remember school can be TOUGH and it’s even harder when you stand out in your classroom.

This week there will be a post that goes even more in depth on how to Instill Self-Confidence in our Brown Kids on The Mixed Mama Blog. If you don’t want to miss that post you can sign up for my (Nicholette/TheMixedMamaBlog’s) email list here.

Let me know if you have any other other back to school tips down below? I would love any tricks that I can implement myself to make the beginning of the school year simpler!

Thanks for reading! See you next week.Nicholette The Mixed Mama Signature

Hi, My name is Nicholette, and I am the mom behind “The Mixed Mama Blog.”  Hair care can be a cultural barrier, so how does one do the hair of multiracial children?  As the White mother of two mixed kids, I felt it was my responsibility to learn how to properly care for their hair.  This personal pursuit led me to share what I’ve learned through my blog where I provide tips, tricks, and product reviews so that other interracial parents don’t have to make the same mistakes I’ve made.  I also share stories, anecdotes, and lessons learned through parenting.  Join me in our goofy adventures and learn some hair tips along the way.
