I loved this story, it is full of warmth and heart. The present and the past dovetail beautifully as Bella reads through Mamie Garrison’s journals, which she finds in an old trunk in the house she inherited from her grandmother. The journals tell of the undercover work Mamie and her husband, John, did with the Quakers, helping slaves escape to freedom. Mamie and John are ordinary working people not activists, yet through compassion, generosity, and a sense of justice, they become abolitionists. The author vividly describes the cruelties and horrors endured by the slaves at the hand of their masters, but light relief comes as we learn more about the relationship between Bella and Andrew, her new boyfriend. The past and present come together when Bella finds herself in danger and she and Andrew must work together to find out who is behind it and why. With well-drawn characters and a story that keeps moving, the pages turn themselves and everything is rounded off beautifully at the end. This is the first in a series and I look forward to reading subsequent books by Teresa McRae, both to learn more of those times and people, and to simply enjoy reading a jolly good book. A most excellent debut, definitely one to recommend.

terryMy name is Teresa McRae. I also go by Shepherd, my married name. Mamie Garrison is my first novel. The second book in the series, Colin Garrison, will be published in Winter 2017. I am 59, married to my husband, Chris, since 1993. I have one daughter and one beautiful 3 month old granddaughter. Having been in an interracial relationship for 25 years, I found that it was natural to gravitate toward issues involving interracial persons when I began my writing. I have been rewarded with good reviews and much interest for which I am most grateful.
