How to Talk About Race & the Future with Our Children—Delia Douglas

Have you ever wondered how to talk about race & the future with your children, nieces and nephews and/or grandchildren?

As Parents, Caregivers, and Educators, we need tools that enable us to effectively advocate for, and empower our children. Scrolling through articles on Huffington Post, I came across a story that caught my attention. After I read through Rebecca Klein’s piece “Yes, Preschool Teachers Really Do Treat Black And White Children Totally Differently,” I sat in silence and wept quietly thinking about my own daughter, my cousins and their children, and our friends’ children. My mind began to travel back to my own childhood: memories of some of the school-age struggles my brother, cousins, and friends faced as well as some challenges that I personally was faced with.

As the reality of the truths shared in this article began to resonate in my mind, the article went viral prompting people across the nation to share their own experiences then and now. In these shared stories we quickly realized that we need to work together to change this biased behavior in schools and fortify our children against biased influences.

Join us for the RACE: HOW TO TALK ABOUT RACE & THE FUTURE WITH OUR CHILDREN panel discussion hosted by Multiracial America (Multiracial Americans of Southern California), Moms Club West Adams, & World City Center.
