Multiracial people frequently are asked “What are you?” And, even when they respond, people seem unwilling to believe the answer. Indeed, sometimes, the response to the answer given is weirder (and often) more offensive than the question itself.
This week, actress Brittani Noel explores these weird responses to the answers given to the question “What Are You?” You will be amazed, but probably not. In fact, if you’re Multiracial, you probably have heard these and more.
In fact, there seem to be no boundaries as to what people will ask Multiracial people about their race, ethnicity or heritage. For some reason, people seem to think that Multiracial people’s family story is the newest board game — i.e., “Guess My Heritage.”
The question is: why are people so fascinated? What is it about ambiguity of race that creates such anxiety in people that they absolutely have to get to the bottom of things, no matter how offensive the inquiry may be? We don’t know, but we throw the question to you. If you have an answer, please tell us.
In the meantime, check out Brittani’s thoughts on the subject.
